Transforming lives and strengthening hāpori through home ownership!

Ko te kaenga te manawa o te tangata

ko te kaenga te pūtake o te oranga

ko te hāpori ka ora!

Kaenga Hou Trust is a kaupapa Māori housing initiative based in Te Tairāwhiti, dedicated to providing a whānau-centric pathway to home ownership and housing independence.

Our name, Kaenga Hou, reflects the heart of our kaupapa.

  • Kaenga is the Ngāti Porou term for home, residence, or place of living. It is attached to the sense of home and identity where ahi kaa live in order to keep the home fires burning.

  • Hou represents new beginnings—a journey of revitalisation and enhanced well-being, blending life’s fresh opportunities with an enduring connection to whenua and whakapapa.

At Kaenga Hou, we strive to empower whānau to achieve home ownership and financial independence through progressive home ownership pathways. We use innovative finance mechanisms and tailored wraparound support throughout your journey to becoming home owners.

Our logo brings this vision to life:

The central triangle places whānau at the heart of our kaupapa.

  • The surrounding triangles represent the essential pillars of affordability, accessibility, and healthy homes - foundations for a thriving future.

  • The Porourangi poutama pattern, designed by Sir Apirana Ngata, symbolises intergenerational growth, advancement, and the continuity of whakapapa—reflecting our commitment to empowering whānau across generations.

  • The purple pays tribute to the legendary Lt. Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngārimu and the C Company of the 28th Māori Battalion, honoring their enduring legacy and the Victoria Cross ribbon.

Kaenga Hou is more than just a housing initiative—it is a pathway to strength, stability, and thriving hāpori for whānau today and for generations to come.
